Today I'm Reading ...
I just finished reading My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga. After reading a lot of heavy/sad realistic fiction I wanted to read something a big more uplifting. This wasn't really the case with My Heart and Other Black Holes. However, in spite of my promise to read something happy, I kept going with this title because the story drew me in from the beginning.
After her father commits a horrible and tragic crime, Aysel must deal with a total upheavel of her life. Between moving in with her mother and her half-siblings, dealing with the way the town looks at her because of what her father did, and worrying that her depression will one day lead her to commit a horrific act, Aysel feels that suicide is the only way out. Online, she meets Roman, a boy who is suffering with horrible guilt following the death of his sister. Roman is looking to form a suicide pact with someone to ensure that he follows through with ending his life in a month. Aysel agrees to form a pact with Roman and the two meet.
As Aysel and Roman begin to get to know one another more, Aysel begins to see all of the things in her life that are truly worth living for - including Roman. However, as special as she sees him, Roman is still undeterred from wanting to end his life. Aysel hopes that in the days leading up to their death date, she can convince him that life is still worth living.
My Heart and Other Black Holes was a quick read. I was desperate to finish as quickly as I could to find out what was going to happen to Aysel and Roman - desperate for a happy ending for them. This is an easy one to recommend to readers who prefer realistic fiction that deals with issues. If you've read, and enjoyed books by Jay Asher or Nina LaCour, give this one a try. Due to content, it is better suited for older YA readers.
