Oh, how I loved The Wednesday Wars. Yet another 2011 YA Nutmeg nominee ... and by far, one of the best ones that I've read so far.
The Wednesday Wars follows Holling Hoodhood during one incredible year of school. Stuck alone at school on Wednesday's while the rest of the class goes to one religious class or another, Holling is sure that he is doomed to spend the entire year with a teacher who hates him. Holling soon learns that spending time with Mrs. Baker is about to turn that school year into the best ever.
This book was a bit slow to start, but after I plugged through the first few pages I was unable to put it down. Set against the back drop of the '60's, this story touches on everything from Yankee greats to the Vietnam war. Although some of the plotlines are a bit "too good to be true," it never fails to entertain.
